Matthew McLaughlin, OLA Class of 2012, received the Valedictorian Award which is given to a senior in recognition of his outstanding achievements during his high school years. He represents the Senior Class in expressing gratitude to the parents and farewell for his classmates. The Valedictorian and Ignatian Awards are considered Jesuit’s highest Extraordinary Awards. He also received Jesuit awards for: Latin, Science, Social Science, Christian Service, English, and Mathematics. In addition he received the UCSD Regents Scholarship, USC Presidential Scholarship, and will be attending Harvard.
Jack Ryan, OLA Class of 2012, received The Ignatian Award which is given to those seniors who have been deemed most outstanding in many phases of school life. The Ignatian and Valedictorian Awards are considered Jesuit’s highest Extraordinary Awards. In addition he received the Creighton University Jesuit HS Recognition Award, Creighton University Magis Award, Creighton University Roman Shaffel, S.J. Award, Georgetown University Ignatian Scholarship, Loyola Chicago Jesuit Heritage Award, Loyola Chicago Jesuit Presidential Scholarship, Loyola Maryland Presidential Scholarships, Loyola Marymount University Presidential Scholarship, Loyola University Chicago Jesuit Heritage Award, Loyola University Chicago Presidential Scholarship, Santa Clara University Dean's Scholarship, Santa Clara University Incentive Grant, University of San Diego Alcala Scholarship, University of San Diego Catholic Education Scholarship, and USF Scholar.
Jack enjoys playing volleyball, leading Jesuit High School’s Speech and Debate Team to victory, and serving his community among numerous other activities. Jack joined the Speech and Debate team his Junior year, and he and his partner won tournaments at Lewis and Clark College and the University of Oregon. They also made the quarterfinals at Stanford and semifinals at Yale. They were eventually Jesuit’s first ever Parliamentary debate team to qualify for California State Championships. As the Speech and Debate team Captain this year he has used and grown his speaking and leadership skills. This past summer, Jack went to Chiapas, Mexico where he worked with underprivileged natives in the area and learned the truth about what goes on in the world around him. He continued to serve his community as President of the Students for Others Club and as a volunteer tutor for CSF. He is also involved in Campus Ministry and serves as a Big Brother, Senior Retreat Team leader and Eucharistic Minister.
Matthew Griffin, OLA Class of 2012, received The North American Martyr’s Award which is given to those Seniors who have best demonstrated the values and attributes of the Jesuit North American Martyrs, Patron Saints of Jesuit High School – faith, perseverance, and a commitment to putting love into action for the greater glory of God. He also received the Kelley & Freeh Leadership Scholarship.
Emily Bloom, OLA Class of 2012, was St. Francis High School’s 2016 Valedictorian and will be attending UCLA’s Nursing School.
John Novotny, OLA Class of 2012, received The Scholar-Artist Award which is given to the senior who has consistently maintained a high grade point average and who has contributed significantly to the visual and performing arts program of Jesuit High School and the Drama Award. John was accepted to NYU, Marymount Manhattan College, PACE University, Manhattan College and Pacific Oregon University. He also was offered Marymount Manhattan College Trustee's Scholarship, NYU Tisch Scholarship, Pratt Institute Presidential Scholarship, Presidents Scholarship and PACE Grant, and Pacific Oregon University Scholarship.
Celia Karim, OLA Class of 2012, was awarded the St. Francis High School’s Booster Club Leadership Award. Celia has been playing cello for nine years and has been a cellist in St. Francis’ theatre arts, String Project, Jesuit, and CSUS. Celia has also been teaching cello students on her own for the past two years. After this last year at SF, she looks forward to playing cello in college, orchestras, and ensembles. Celia will be attending the University of Wyoming. She hopes that working as a National Parks Ranger is in her future.
Nina Sanfilippo, OLA Class of 2012 was awarded St. Francis High School's Booster Club Leadership Award
Megan Kropf is a 2006 alumni of OLA and a 2010 graduate of St. Francis. She graduated with a BS degree in Animal Science from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2014. Megan currently works as a Superintendent in charge of live poultry production for Foster Farms in Livingston, CA. Megan oversees six ranches with eighty employees and 16 million chickens.
Dominic Ricci is a 2009 alumni of OLA and a 2013 graduate of Jesuit High School and is a senior at USC in the fall. He is majoring in Interactive Entertainment and has an internship at Treyarch (division of Activision) who is an industry leader in game development.
Anna Kropf is a 2010 alumni of OLA and a 2014 graduate of St. Francis. She is a sophomore at the University of Alabama studying Finance in their honors college. She just returned from spending the semester in Italy and will be interning this summer in Reston, Virginia for FireEye, a networking security company.
Philip Tateishi, OLA class of '96, graduated from Jesuit High School '00, CSUS (‘04) and got his teaching credential and Masters of Education from National University (‘11). Philip Tateishi was called to his profession after teaching English in Japan for 2 years. He continues to teach because it challenges him daily as well as allowing him serve others in his community.
Peter Tateishi, OLA class of ‘94, graduated from Jesuit High School ‘98 is the President and CEO of Sacramento Metro Chamber of Commerce. “I’ve always been attached to the idea of serving, of how you can impact your community in ways that your neighbors feel, in ways that your family feels.” -Peter Tateishi. Shane Barnes, OLA class of ‘03, graduated from Jesuit High School ’07 and his wife, Samantha Jo Barnes, Blackhawk pilots for the U.S. Army, have been promoted to Captain and will be returning to serve in the states following three years of service in South Korea. Thank you for your service!
Matthew Mellas, OLA student, has been selected as a 2016 nominee for the Broadcom MASTERS national middle school science competition. A nomination distinguishes the student’s science fair project as among the top 10% in the United States this past school year. Amazing! Matthew is being considered for additional top awards. Matthew completed essays about the science fair project, and wrote several creative essays to demonstrate problem solving and scientific thinking. He earned this opportunity by placing well at our regional science fair. Thank you for your prayerful support as his work rises to the next level of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) MASTERS competition.
CONGRATULATIONS to our Alumni Thomas Sperbeck, a Sophomore at Boise State (2015), Became one of BSU's top receivers this past year, stepping into the starting line-up fulltime, and was named Offensive MVP at the Fiesta Bowl against No. 10 Arizona in December!!

OLA Alumni Take Part in Rio Americano H.S. Beautification Project 2015 Abby Milligan and Kailey Backhus, were part of an artistic team that helped beautify the school by painting a ground mural featuring a koi pond. We are very proud of our cougar alumni!!!!!!!
